We now hear that another ship has been sent, together

with the following deputies, Wang Jen T'ang, Naval and

Foreign Deputy, Captains Lin Kwo Hsiang, Wu Ching Jung, and

the following interpreters in Japanese, Liao Wei Hsun and

Li Tien. These started from Canton on March 9th.

The situation of the Island is as follows:-

N. Waichow

about 120 English miles.

N.E. Ch'aochou, Swatow

N.W. Hongkong

about 140 English miles.

about 170 English miles.

N.E. Formosa

about 240 English miles.

S.E. Philippine Islands

about 400 English miles.

The island is surrounded by a sandy beach and rich

in marine produce. It is much frequented by fishing craft

from Kwangtung and Fukien. There is a temple Lo T'ien

Hou (Maritchi) and it is an old saying in Canton

Formerly an Englishman named Pratas was wrecked here

and foreign maps have ever since called it "Pratas Island".

Of late years a Japanese named Nishizawa has paid attention

to this island, and desires to appropriate it and change

its name to Nishizawa. He would drive away our junks and

burn our ancient temple. Yet another international dispute

has thus arisen.
